River Region Psychiatry:  Ethics in Mental Health And Addiction

Part 1:

  1. Provide information on the ethical concerns and clarifications in the ACA Code.
  2. Provide resources for dealing with technology concerns that emerge when working with clients.
  3. Discuss Informed Consent
  4. Understand ethics regarding technology, social media and records storage

Review the use of technology and provide a review of the Ethical Codes and standards of practice. The presentation will include a discussion of how codes may be used to address cultural concerns, their limitations and the importance of consultation with other professionals.

Part 2:

  1. Understand and Review the neuro biology of addiction and ethics
  2. Understand and Review the Current disease model of addiction
  3. Understand and relate the neuro biology of addiction to current treatment approaches.
  4. Understand and Review the Ethical Treatment of Current Cannabis Use Disorders.
  5. Understand and Review the Current Pathophysiology of Cannabis.
  6. Understand and Review the Current Evidence about Cannabis Use and Psychiatric Disorders.

The discussion on the neurobiology of addiction and cannabis dependence would include the following.  The neural biology of addiction would discuss the latest theories behind the biology of addiction.  We would also include discussion about all treatment approaches based on the neurobiology of addiction.  The discussion on cannabis dependence would include the neurobiology of cannabis addiction.  The long-term and short-term effects of cannabis on the brain and behavior.  The interactions between cannabis use and psychiatric disorders. Ethical considerations for treatment decision making will be discussed during the presentation.

Dr. Jacobson has been teaching since 1998 she has a broad background in psychology and counseling. She obtained a Bachelor and Master of Arts Degree in Psychology from Auburn University in Montgomery, AL. and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Educational Psychology from Auburn University in Auburn, Alabama. Combined her degrees bring an extensive study in topics in the area of psychology. She continued her education and obtained a Counseling License (LPC-S), obtained NCC status and became a Registered Play Therapist. Her private practice focused on grief and trauma and she is the author of the book “Monday Morning Living.” She has served as the President of the Alabama Association for Play Therapy and as Co-Chair of the Behavioral Health and Wellness Committee for AlaVetNet. In 2008, she began working with the Alabama National Guard Yellow Ribbon program providing workshops on the stages of deployment, reintegration, resilience and suicide prevention.  Since 2011 – Dr. Jacobson has been working with the Alabama National Guard as Program Coordinator for Resilience, Risk Reduction and Suicide Prevention.

Dr. Ramakanth Vemuluri (Dr.Ram) has been in Montgomery since 2011. After graduating from medical school in India he moved to Scotland where he completed his training in psychiatry. He obtained Membership in the Royal College of Psychiatrists in London and moved to London where he worked as a consultant doing research before moving to America. He completed a psychiatry residency through the joint program of Creighton University and University of Nebraska. He has been practicing in the field of psychiatry since 2000. Dr. Ram is Board Certified in Psychiatry and a Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

Dr. Ram devotes most of his time to his outpatient practice. However, he also provides consultation to patients on medical and surgical floors; performs second opinion evaluations, sees patients in community psychiatry (group homes and nursing homes) and practices inpatient psychiatry as time permits. Dr. Ram treats and manages depression, anxiety, panic, attention problems, sleep issues, PTSD, OCD, anger issues, psychotic disorders, personality problems, dementia and other psychiatric disorders. Dr. Ram specializes in treating people with substance use disorders (addiction). The majority of his patient population includes adult and geriatric age groups.

Dr.Ram specializes in psychopharmacology and enjoys providing eclectic and integrated psychotherapeutic interventions during his sessions. He strongly believes in mental wellbeing of individuals. He strives hard to achieve this by working collaboratively with his patients, their families and other providers involved in the care of his patients. Outside of his work, he likes to read philosophy and watch movies. He enjoys spending time with his family and friends.

All requests must be made in writing or by email. No refunds issued for any reason after January 16, 2018. In the unlikely event the workshop cannot be held, registrants will receive complimentary admission to a rescheduled workshop or a full value voucher, good for one year, for a future workshop.
